Speech and language therapists are allied health professionals. They often work alongside other professionals to meet the needs of clients (as part of the multidisciplinary team).
It is possible that you may have involvement with a physiotherapist, occupational therapist and psychologist alongside your speech and language therapist. Where this is the case we will (with your permission) keep in touch with these other professionals to ensure that we are working consistently to support your rehabilitation. Specialist Speech Therapy regularly provide speech and language therapy assessment and treatment following instructions from a case manager.
If your child has Special Educational Needs (SEN) they may also have a SENCO.
What are the roles of the members of the multi-disciplinary team?
Case manager – is responsible for coordinating rehabilitation, care and support of people with complex, clinical needs.
Educational Psychologist – helps children or young people experiencing problems in eduction with the aim of enhancing their learning.
Occupational Therapist (OT) -an OT aims to promote independence in daily tasks such as washing and dressing. They may suggest environmental changes or pieces of equipment to promote people’s independence.
Neuropsychologist – is a psychologist with a specialist understanding of the relationship between brain and neuropsychological functions such as behaviour and cognition.
Physiotherapist -helps and treats people with physical problems to maximise movement
SENCO (Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator) – is the person in the school or nursery responsible for special educational needs
Speech and language therapist (SLT/SALT)- a speech and language therapist will assess and treat speech, language, communication and swallowing difficulties.
