Dyspraxia
•Dyspraxia is a problem of motor co-ordination/planning. The child knows what they want to say but they are unable to generate the correct motor pattern.
•It affects 5-7% of the population; 3:1 males to females
•It may be a fine motor co-ordination problem i.e. affecting eating, speaking, dressing, handwriting, drawing
•It may be a gross motor co-ordination problem i.e. whole or large body movements for sports activities
•It may be a combination of both
•It affects: attention/concentration/perception/social skills
•Unclear or mumbled speech is associated with handwriting difficulties, and problems chewing meat i.e. fine motor co-ordination problem.
•There is a correlation between developmental verbal dyspraxia and later literacy difficulties
